Since Anita Monga was fired from the Castro more than a month ago, there's been a groundswell of support from distributors, filmmakers, and other programmers. Now it's time that we, the audience members, who will probably be most affected by the changes at the Castro, join in. The time has come to act on our passion for good film in the Bay Area. If we want that to continue, we must take action.

BOYCOTT January 1 - 5, 2005
Let's send the owners the strongest message we can: their "new and improved" Castro is no longer our home. For the first five days of 2005 we are calling on all audience members to avoid the Castro Theatre. For those five days, you can find another venue to fill your movie needs. Here's what you'll be missing: Moulin Rouge, West Side Story, A Star Is Born, O Lucky Man! and Pal Joey.

If you're like many avid filmgoers, and even some not-so-avid filmgoers, you've seen these already—maybe more than once. If you haven't and want to, we're sorry. But listen: we can almost guarantee these familiar films play on the big screen again sometime soon. It's a small sacrifice, but it can make a big difference.

TAKE A STAND at the Concession Stand
Did you know that movie theatres make most of their money selling popcorn, soda and candy, not tickets? Boycotting the concession stand is a simple way to register our displeasure with the Castro Theatre's new direction, without hurting the film festivals who may not have been able to move to another venue.

Imagine the scene: Opening night of a big festival. The theatre is packed. The balcony is open. But there's no line to buy popcorn. One thousand people in the house, no popcorn sold. Simple. Easy. And effective.

So remember: Get a bite or a soda in the neighborhood before or after the show and give the Castro Theatre concessions stand a pass. (But take a moment to tip the concessionaires anyway — it's not their fault!)
